Five Providence College faculty members were awarded prestigious Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation fellowships, allowing them to travel abroad and pursue research projects that enrich both their scholarship and teaching. Recipients of the fellowship included Jeffrey Johnson (History), Sang Woo Kang (Music), Katherine Kranz (Social Work), Jessica Mulligan (Health Sciences), and Lynne Ryan (Education), whose international research experiences are bringing new perspectives and learning opportunities to Providence College students. The faculty were among just 42 recipients selected nationwide and used the opportunity to immerse themselves in new cultures, educational systems, and research environments.
Their projects took them around the world—from Qatar and Oman to Italy, Switzerland, England, and Finland—where they explored topics including history and cultural exchange, classical music interpretation, harm reduction policies, public health research methods, and inclusive teacher education. Faculty members emphasized how these experiences broadened their perspectives and provided new insights they could bring directly into their classrooms and research programs.
The fellowships highlight Providence College’s commitment to faculty scholarship and global engagement, demonstrating how international experiences can enhance teaching, research, and student learning across a wide range of disciplines.
